Our wastewater infrastructure has experienced an increase in clogs due to flushable wipes.
Despite their name, “flushable” wipes do not break down like toilet paper. These products, along with paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and similar items, do not disintegrate in water. Instead, they accumulate in our sewer lines, creating serious blockages that can lead to:
– Sewage backups into homes and streets
– Costly emergency repairs
– Unsanitary conditions in our community
– Higher maintenance costs
Please only flush the 3 P’s: Pee, Poo, and toilet Paper.
Everything else belongs in the trash, including:
– “Flushable” wipes (baby wipes, personal hygiene wipes, cleaning wipes)
– Paper towels and napkins
– Feminine hygiene products
– Cotton swabs and cotton balls
– Dental floss
– Medication
– Cooking grease or oil
The video in the link below, created by the Great Lakes Water Authority, shows the effects of flushable wipes on our Sewer System. Please be advised, this video contains footage of actual clogs, which some viewers may find graphic.
